Munich, Germany, 03/20/2019 – Brainlab, a portfolio company of EMH Partners, today announced the acquisition of Medineering, a developer of application-specific robotics technologies. EMH Partners, a Munich-based investment company for medium-sized companies in the DACH region, welcomes the acquisition. With the investment in Medineering, Brainlab aims to drive the democratization of digitized surgery with scalable solutions that expand and dissolve the boundaries of clinical practice. The goal of further digitizing clinical work is thus continued with the acquisition by Brainlab and fully in line with the mission of EMH Partners to make mid-sized companies in various industries more successful and competitive through digitization.
Portfolio deepening through Medineering.
Brainlab, a global pioneer in software-driven medical technology, has been supporting Medineering as an investor and sales partner for almost three years. Through the acquisition, the privately held company is deepening its own portfolio in the field of neurosurgery. Medineering develops surgical robots and robot technologies for specific medical applications, including a flexible robot arm (Cirq®) for surgery and a robotics platform that is manufacturer-neutral. The acquisition makes this platform accessible to many of Brainlab’s more than 4,000 customers, thereby increasing its market coverage in outpatient surgical centers.
Another platform for Brainlab.
Medineering now adds another platform to the already existing open hardware architecture of the Brainlab ecosystem for digital surgery. This enables medical technology companies to independently develop their own solutions and applications for many different medical fields. In contrast to other closed monolithic industrial solutions, the acquisition is intended to create an open platform for a broad spectrum of clinical opportunities.
“The digitization of clinical and surgical processes is a critical factor in optimizing healthcare services,” explains Sebastian Kuss, Managing Partner and co-founder of EMH Partners. “We are proud to be able to shape this profound change with our investment in Brainlab and to see how Brainlab evolves its ecosystem.”
“Medineering introduced a new approach to surgical robotics less than three years ago when the partnership began,” says Stefan Vilsmeier, President and CEO of Brainlab. “Today, we are going one step further and accelerate this development with additional resources to open up to an even broader clinical market”.
